Umrah in Ramadan 2027: timing, crowds and staying connected

For many UK pilgrims, Umrah in Ramadan is the trip they have been saving for. In 2027 Ramadan is expected to begin around 8 February and end around 8 March, depending on the sighting of the moon, which puts the February half-term inside the month. This guide covers the practical side of a Ramadan trip: timing, crowds, what happens to the mobile network in the last ten nights, and how much data a longer stay needs.

Timing your trip

Ramadan trips from the UK tend to fall into three groups: the opening days of the month, the February half-term week, and the last ten nights. Each has a different feel:

  • The first part of the month is usually the calmest of the three, and the easiest time to find flights and hotels close to the Haram.
  • The February half-term is when UK families travel, so expect flights and hotels to cost more and to sell out earlier.
  • The last ten nights are the busiest time of the whole year at the Haram. Many pilgrims come for the chance of Laylat al-Qadr, and both Makkah and Madinah are at their fullest.

Because the start and end of the month depend on the moon, give yourself a day or two of flexibility on either side, and choose an eSIM plan with validity to spare.

Crowds and the network in the last ten nights

Coverage in central Makkah and Madinah is generally good. But in the last ten nights, when the Haram and the streets around it are packed late into the night, an enormous number of phones share the same masts. Data can slow to a crawl at the busiest moments, especially around Taraweeh, Qiyam and the hour after iftar, when everyone wants to call home at once. That happens on every network.

A few things make it easier:

  • Save video calls for the hotel or for quieter times of day. A voice note or message gets through far more easily in a crowd.
  • Download offline maps of Makkah and Madinah before you leave home, and save your hotel in each city.
  • Agree meeting points and times with family and your group in advance, so you are not relying on messages arriving instantly.
  • Carry a power bank. A phone searching for a signal in a crowd uses its battery quickly.

Which plan for a longer stay

Ramadan stays are often longer than a winter Umrah, and the evenings tend to be spent out rather than in the hotel, so mobile data does more of the work. Count the days you will be in Saudi Arabia, not the nights: a plan's validity starts when the eSIM first connects there.

  • Up to two weeks: 3 GB for 30 days, or 5 GB for 30 days if you video-call most days. The 30-day plans leave room for a moon-dependent change of dates.
  • Two weeks to a month: 5 GB or 10 GB for 30 days. The difference is mostly how much you video-call home.
  • Heavy daily use: a daily plan gives you a fresh allowance of high-speed data each day for the number of days you choose, and keeps you connected at a slower speed if you use it up.
  • Group leaders: 20 GB for 30 days.

You use the eSIM for mobile data, so your UK SIM can stay switched on for bank texts while WhatsApp keeps your usual number. Our Umrah eSIM guide covers setting up before you fly in more detail.

Top-ups

If you are running low halfway through the month, you can usually top up from your account without changing or reinstalling the eSIM; the plan page shows whether your plan can be topped up. It is worth checking your remaining data before the last ten nights rather than during them, when the network is at its busiest.

Visas, permits and health

Ramadan is outside the Hajj season, so the usual routes to Umrah apply. Our Umrah checklist for UK pilgrims has a full visa and permits section with links to the official pages, plus the documents, apps and vaccination certificate you need. Book your Umrah permit in Nusuk as soon as you can: it is the busiest month of the year. gov.uk also notes that infections spread quickly in the crowds of Hajj and Ramadan, so it is worth reading the health advice on TravelHealthPro before you go.

We are not a visa service or travel agent. Rules change, so confirm everything on the official sites before you book.
