How to install your Japan eSIM in 3 steps

Getting connected in Japan takes a few minutes if you do it before you leave home. Since eSIM installation requires an internet connection, download and install the profile on Wi-Fi before you board - you cannot add it after landing at Narita or Kansai International with no signal.

1. Buy your plan. Choose a data allowance based on how long you're staying and whether you plan to stream or navigate heavily around Tokyo, Kyoto, or Hokkaido.
2. Scan and install on Wi-Fi. On iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM and scan the QR code. On Android, go to Settings > Network & Internet > SIM Manager > Add eSIM. Do this at home, at your hotel, or on airport Wi-Fi before your flight to Japan departs.
3. Activate on arrival. Once you land - whether at Narita, Haneda, Kansai, or Chubu Centrair - enable data roaming for the new eSIM line in your phone's settings. Coverage typically kicks in within the terminal itself, so you can get train and navigation apps running before you even reach the platform.

Mobile network coverage in Japan

Japan's four carriers cover the country unevenly, and which one your eSIM rides on affects how well you're connected outside the big cities.

Cities

NTT Docomo holds the largest share of subscribers and delivers the most consistent 5G coverage across Tokyo's 23 wards and Osaka, with 5G now reaching most of both city centers. KDDI/au runs a close second in the big cities and secondary hubs. SoftBank tends to edge ahead on urban speeds in dense areas but gets patchier once you leave city limits. Rakuten Mobile is the newest entrant and still fills in gaps outside major metro areas, so it's worth avoiding if your itinerary includes anywhere remote.

Rural areas, mountains, and islands

Coverage drops sharply outside the cities: rural 5G availability falls to roughly 8% nationwide, with 4G as the fallback. Known dead zones include the Kiso Valley, Kamikochi, Daisetsuzan, Furano, Biei, and the slopes around Mount Fuji, where connectivity gets worse above roughly 2,000 meters. Docomo is generally the safer pick for mountainous or island itineraries - its network historically skews toward rural and remote terrain. In Okinawa, the main island runs near-universal 4G, but outer Yaeyama islands like Yonaguni and Iriomote can drop to 80-90% coverage, so plan for gaps if you're island-hopping.

Getting around: trains and ferries

The Tokaido and Tohoku Shinkansen lines now cover the large majority of bullet-train routes, with speeds often exceeding 100 Mbps, and carriers continue to upgrade trackside equipment to keep pace with high-speed travel. Domestic ferry routes are a different story - expect connectivity gaps at sea on longer maritime crossings, so download maps, tickets, and entertainment before you board.

eSIM vs. roaming vs. a local SIM in Japan

A local SIM can make sense if you're staying in Japan for months rather than weeks, since carriers offer better long-term value once you've cleared the in-person ID check - but for a short trip, arranging data before you fly avoids the airport queue entirely.

Tips for staying connected in Japan

• Install your eSIM on Wi-Fi before you fly - it needs an internet connection to activate, and airport Wi-Fi at Narita or Kansai isn't always reliable the moment you land.
• If your trip includes Hokkaido backcountry, the Yaeyama islands, or the Mount Fuji area, favor a plan riding on Docomo's network - it has the strongest rural and mountain footprint of the four carriers.
• Data-only eSIMs cannot dial emergency numbers. Keep a way to make voice calls: dial 110 for police, 119 for fire or ambulance, and 118 for the coast guard, all free and with multi-lingual support.
• On the Tokaido or Tohoku Shinkansen, expect solid coverage for most of the route - a good time to sync offline maps for the rural or mountain legs of your trip.
