How to install your Vietnam eSIM in 3 steps

Your Vietnam eSIM profile has to be downloaded over Wi-Fi, so get it installed before you leave home rather than trying to do it after landing at Noi Bai or Tan Son Nhat with no connection yet. The process itself takes only a few minutes on either iPhone or Android.

1. On iPhone, open Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM, then choose Use QR Code and scan the code from your confirmation email; the phone will pull in your Vietnam data plan automatically once it has a Wi-Fi signal.
2. On Android, the path is usually Settings > Network & Internet > SIM Manager (or Connections > SIM Manager on some Samsung models) > Add eSIM, then scan the same QR code; menu wording varies slightly by manufacturer but the Add eSIM option is always there.
3. After you land - whether that's Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City, Noi Bai in Hanoi, or Da Nang International - open your eSIM's settings and switch on data roaming for that line specifically, since it stays off by default and your home SIM's roaming should stay untouched.

In the cities

Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Da Nang and Hue all get strong 4G and 5G from every major carrier. Vinaphone tends to post strong urban 5G speeds, often in the range of several hundred Mbps in dense districts, while Viettel and MobiFone both run dependable citywide 4G and are rolling out 5G alongside it. 5G is now live in cities and provincial capitals nationwide, though indoor reception in older buildings can lag behind outdoor coverage.

Rural coast, delta and mountains

The flat, densely populated Mekong Delta has some of the best rural coverage in the country thanks to short distances between towers. Coastal stretches such as Nha Trang and the Hue-to-Da Nang road are generally reliable across carriers. The picture changes sharply in the northern highlands: around trekking bases like Sapa and Ha Giang, Viettel's state-backed network is the one that keeps working above roughly 1,500 metres, while Vinaphone and MobiFone signal can fade out well before the ridgelines. Even Viettel has known gaps on isolated passes such as Ma Pi Leng.

Getting around

Hanoi's urban rail and the intercity North-South rail line both run through well-served corridors, so a data connection on these routes is rarely an issue. If your itinerary swings from a Hanoi city break into a multi-day Ha Giang loop, plan for possible gaps once you're off the main road and climbing into the passes.

If you're settling in for a long stay rather than a short trip, a local SIM from Viettel, Vinaphone or MobiFone can work out cheaper over several weeks, but it means the passport check, the registration paperwork, and now the biometric step - an eSIM skips all of that.

Tips for staying connected in Vietnam

• Save the emergency numbers before you land: 113 for police, 114 for fire, 115 for ambulance and 112 for search and rescue - all free and staffed around the clock, though English-speaking operators aren't guaranteed.
• Heading into the Ha Giang loop or up toward Sapa? Expect Viettel to hold a signal longest as you climb, and treat any bar of coverage past 1,500 metres as a bonus rather than a given.
• If a physical Vietnamese SIM is your backup plan, keep your passport on you - registration is mandatory and an unregistered SIM gets deactivated within 24-48 hours.
• On the coastal run from Hue to Da Nang to Nha Trang, connectivity is generally strong enough to stream turn-by-turn directions the whole way.
