How to install your Italy eSIM in 3 steps

Getting set up takes a few minutes and is far simpler than the passport paperwork required for a physical Italian SIM. Do it before you leave home, since the install step itself needs an internet connection.

1. Buy your plan. Choose a data amount based on your itinerary - more if you're heading beyond Rome and Milan into rural areas or the islands where coverage is patchier.

Rural areas, mountains, and islands

Coverage thins out once you leave the cities. TIM has historically built out the most rural and mountain infrastructure, so it tends to hold up best in areas like the Apennines where other networks fade. The islands show a similar pattern: in Sicily, Palermo and Catania are well served, but the interior and the slopes of Mount Etna get patchy, and in Sardinia the coast is fine while the Supramonte interior drops off sharply. Coastal cliffs along the Amalfi Coast can physically block signal in places, and TIM again tends to be the steadier option there.

Getting around by train

High-speed rail has been upgraded with onboard signal on routes including Turin-Milan and Bologna-Florence, but some tunnels on other lines still have dead spots where data cuts out for a stretch.
