Your Vlorë eSIM guide
Vlorë combines city energy with a holiday mood. Palm-lined streets lead down to the water, cafes and seafood restaurants fill up as the heat of the day fades, and boats head out to wild headlands and secluded beaches across the bay. Mountains rise behind the city, the sunsets over the water are spectacular, and in summer the whole place seems to stay up late.
Mobile coverage in Vlorë
Vlorë sits on a wide bay near the point where the Adriatic gives way to the Ionian Sea, and as one of Albania's larger cities it is generally well covered. One and Vodafone both serve the area, and in the city centre, along the waterfront and through the hotel districts to the south, a steady 4G signal is normal. Most hotels and many restaurants also offer Wi-Fi. On summer evenings, when the seafront is packed, data can feel slower than the signal bars suggest.
Coverage becomes less predictable once you leave the city behind. The Karaburun peninsula across the bay is rugged and largely undeveloped, and signal along its shores is weak or absent in many places; the same goes for much of the open water in between. The road south towards the Llogara Pass has its gaps too. Each plan's page shows which network it uses, which is worth a glance if you plan to explore beyond the city.
Getting around Vlorë
From Tirana International Airport (TIA), Vlorë is a couple of hours or so by road, and buses and furgons run between the city and the capital, as well as to Durrës and other towns. Hire cars are popular too, since Vlorë is the gateway to the Riviera and the SH8 coast road south. The main road from the north passes through farmland and towns, and signal along it is usually decent for maps and messages.
Around the city, local buses run along the coast road to the beaches south of the centre, and taxis are easy to find. A taxi is the simplest way back from a late dinner by the sea, and having data makes it easy to share your location with the driver. Many visitors also take to the water, with boat trips leaving from the waterfront for the peninsula and the island offshore. Close to the city, you will usually keep a connection on board, but as the boat heads out across the bay the signal weakens and can disappear altogether.
Where you'll use data most in Vlorë
The Lungomare, the long seafront promenade, is the city's social hub, with beaches on one side and bars, restaurants and ice cream parlours on the other. It is generally well connected, making it the natural place to book a boat trip or find somewhere for dinner. In the centre, the Independence Monument is the city's best-known landmark and a common meeting point, and the surrounding streets usually have good coverage.
The big day out is a boat trip to Sazan Island and the coves of Karaburun, where clear water, sea caves and empty beaches make up for the lack of facilities. Expect signal to be weak or absent for much of the trip, so save photos to upload later and make sure you know where and when the boat returns. Back on land, the beaches south of the city towards the mountains are mostly within reach of a reasonable signal.
Tips for staying connected in Vlorë
- Install the eSIM before leaving the UK and switch it on after landing at TIA, so you can check bus times or directions for the drive to the coast.
- Do not assume your UK plan's Europe roaming covers you here: Albania is not in the EU, and those allowances usually leave it out. Check what your network charges before using roaming.
- Before boarding a boat to Sazan Island or Karaburun, note the return time and pick-up point, as you may be out of contact for hours.
- Pick up an offline map of the coast road if you are heading on from Vlorë to the Riviera and the Llogara Pass.
- Keep your phone in a dry bag on boat trips, especially if the day includes swimming stops.
- Put Albania's emergency numbers in your contacts: 129 for police, 127 for ambulance and 128 for fire.
