Your Albanian Riviera eSIM guide
Between the mountains and the Ionian Sea, the coast south of Vlorë makes one of the Mediterranean's great road trips. Villages of stone houses cling to hillsides above pebble beaches, the water is astonishingly clear, and each bay seems quieter than the last. Spend lazy days swimming and eating seafood, then climb to an old fort or a hilltop village to watch the sun sink into the sea.
Mobile coverage on the Albanian Riviera
The Albanian Riviera runs south from Vlorë towards Saranda, and coverage along it reflects the landscape: good in the villages, more variable in between. Both main networks, One and Vodafone, serve the coastline, and in the larger resort villages such as Dhermi and Himara you can generally expect a dependable 4G signal around the beaches, guesthouses and seafront restaurants.
Away from the villages, mountains plunge almost straight into the sea, and that terrain creates gaps. Hidden coves at the foot of cliffs, steep side valleys and the higher stretches of road can all drop to weak signal or none at all. Smaller settlements are usually covered, but once you leave the main road it pays to treat signal as a bonus rather than a given. Each plan's page shows which network it uses, if you would like to check before you travel.
Getting around on the Albanian Riviera
The SH8 coast road is the backbone of the Riviera, running south from Vlorë and climbing over the Llogara Pass before dropping in a series of dramatic bends towards Dhermi. Most international visitors arrive through Tirana International Airport (TIA) and drive or take a bus down via Vlorë, while those coming from the south often fly to Corfu, cross by ferry to Saranda and head north up the coast. A hire car gives the most freedom to explore the coves and villages at your own pace.
Signal on the SH8 is fine near towns but patchy on the mountain stretches, especially around the Llogara Pass, where you may lose coverage for a while. Intercity buses and furgons link the main villages, though services thin out away from the summer season. Download an offline map before you set off rather than relying on live navigation on the bends. Boat trips run from several beaches to coves that are hard to reach by land, and coverage on the water fades the further you are from shore.
Where you'll use data most on the Albanian Riviera
Dhermi and nearby Jale are among the liveliest spots in summer, with beach bars and long shingle bays where signal is usually good. Further south, Himara combines a working town, a seafront for evening walks and an old quarter up on the hill, and it is one of the better-connected bases on the coast. Between Himara and Saranda, the small fortress at Porto Palermo, set on a little peninsula in a sheltered bay, is a favourite photo stop, though signal around the bay can be variable.
Gjipe beach is one of the most beautiful spots on the whole coast, a cove at the mouth of a canyon that you reach on foot down a track or by boat. Expect little or no signal there, so tell someone your plans and take water and a downloaded map. The smaller coves and villages along the way, from fishing hamlets to hillside settlements of old stone houses, are best enjoyed slowly, so save directions and booking details while you still have a connection.
Tips for staying connected on the Albanian Riviera
- Get your eSIM installed at home and switch it on when you land in Albania, so it is working before you start the long drive down the coast.
- Download offline maps of the whole coastline, including the Llogara Pass, before leaving Vlorë or Saranda.
- Albania does not belong to the EU, so the EU roaming package with most UK plans normally will not apply on the Riviera. Check your own network's charges for Albania first.
- Before walking down to Gjipe or taking a boat to a remote cove, let someone know where you are heading and when you expect to be back.
- Download playlists, podcasts and audiobooks before long drives on the SH8, as streaming will cut out on the mountain sections.
- Save Albania's emergency numbers somewhere easy to find: 129 for police, 127 for ambulance and 128 for fire.
Our Albania eSIM page covers the whole country, and you can plan either end of the coast with eSIM for Vlorë, eSIM for Saranda and eSIM for Ksamil.
