Your Saranda eSIM guide
Saranda curves around a sheltered southern bay, its hillside of hotels and apartments facing the green mountains of Corfu across the water. Mornings are for swimming off the rocky shoreline, afternoons for trips out to ancient ruins and a spring of impossibly blue water, and as the sun drops the whole town heads down to the sea to stroll, eat and watch the lights come on.
Mobile coverage in Saranda
Saranda is the main town of Albania's far south, and its built-up centre generally enjoys good mobile coverage. Both One and Vodafone serve the town, and along the waterfront, through the streets of hotels behind it and in the main shopping area, a reliable 4G connection is the norm rather than the exception. Hotels and cafes often add Wi-Fi to the mix, though the quality of those connections varies a great deal from one place to the next.
Step outside the town and the picture becomes more mixed. The coast to the south towards Ksamil is fairly well served, but inland valleys and quieter stretches of road can bring weaker signal or short gaps. On the busiest summer evenings, when the seafront fills up, a crowded network can also make data feel slower even with a strong signal showing. If you want to know which network you will be on, each plan's page shows which network it uses.
Getting around Saranda
Many UK visitors reach Saranda by flying to Corfu and crossing on one of the regular ferries, with more sailings in summer. Others travel down from Tirana International Airport (TIA), a long journey of several hours by bus or hire car, with the final stretch winding through the hills. Wherever you arrive from, having data working at the port or the bus stop makes it far easier to find your accommodation in a town built up a steep slope.
Within town, most places are walkable, though some of the streets climbing away from the bay are steep going in the heat. Local buses run along the coast to Ksamil and on to Butrint, furgons cover other routes, and taxis are easy to find. Signal on the coast road south is usually fine, while the drive inland to the Blue Eye passes through quieter countryside where coverage can come and go. If you are hiring a car, download an offline map before setting off.
Where you'll use data most in Saranda
The seafront promenade is the heart of Saranda, lined with restaurants, bars and ice cream stalls, and it is generally well connected for checking menus, sharing photos or arranging the next day's boat trip. Above the town, Lekuresi Castle offers one of the best viewpoints on this stretch of coast, with the bay and Corfu spread out below. Signal at the castle is usually reasonable, though it can be less consistent than down in the centre.
A short drive south, the ancient site of Butrint is one of Albania's highlights, a large open site of ruins set among trees beside a lake. Coverage near the entrance is typically workable, but in the shadier, wooded corners further in it can weaken, so download any guides or notes before you start walking. Inland, the Blue Eye spring sits in a green valley where signal on the approach road is patchy, so save directions in advance. Ksamil, with its beaches and little islands, is close enough for an easy half day out.
Tips for staying connected in Saranda
- Set up your eSIM at home and switch it on once you reach Albania, whether that is at the ferry port or after the drive down from Tirana.
- Corfu is a different country: the ferry takes you into Greece, where an Albania-only plan will not work. If you are flying in via Corfu or planning a day trip back, take a look at eSIM for Greece.
- Albania is not part of the EU, so the European roaming bundle that comes with most UK plans is unlikely to cover your time here. Check your provider's rates for Albania before switching roaming on.
- Save an offline map covering Saranda, Butrint and the Blue Eye before you set out, as country roads can lose signal.
- Book boat trips and restaurant tables while you are on the promenade, where the connection is steadier than out on the water or up in the hills.
- Note down Albania's emergency numbers before heading out: 129 for police, 127 for ambulance and 128 for fire.
