Your Alanya eSIM guide
Alanya is a classic Turkish Riviera holiday town that does sunshine, sand and sea views with plenty of character. Days drift between Cleopatra Beach, boat trips to the sea caves and long lunches by the harbour, evenings bring a lively bar and restaurant scene, and the cooler mountain valleys inland are only a short drive away when you want a break from the heat.
Mobile coverage in Alanya
Alanya stretches along the coast on either side of a great rocky headland crowned by its castle, with long sandy beaches running away to the east and west and the Taurus mountains rising close behind. The town and its resort suburbs form an almost continuous built-up strip, and across that strip 4G signal is generally strong: the seafront, the harbour, the main shopping streets and the hotel districts all tend to give a dependable connection for maps, messaging and uploads. On the busiest summer evenings around the harbour and the bars, things can feel a little slower, but genuine gaps in town are rare.
All three of Turkey's mobile networks, Turkcell, Vodafone and Türk Telekom, serve Alanya. Coverage becomes less certain in two kinds of place: out on the water, where the signal fades the further a boat moves from shore, and inland, where the land climbs quickly into steep valleys and mountain villages. If you plan to spend a lot of time away from the coast, it's worth looking at each plan's page, which shows the network it uses.
Getting around Alanya
Alanya has two airport options. Gazipasa-Alanya Airport (GZP) is much closer, usually less than an hour's drive east of town, but it handles a smaller number of flights. Antalya Airport (AYT) has far more routes from the UK, though the transfer along the coast road takes a couple of hours or more. On that longer run the road passes through a string of towns and resorts, so signal usually holds well, with occasional short dips on the quieter stretches in between. Having your eSIM working from arrivals makes it easy to track a transfer or message your accommodation along the way.
Around Alanya itself, getting about is straightforward: dolmus minibuses and town buses run along the coast road linking the centre with the resort areas to the east and west, and taxis are easy to find. Much of the centre is walkable, and a cable car runs from near Cleopatra Beach up towards the castle for anyone who would rather not tackle the climb on foot. Signal on the coastal buses is steady, mirroring the built-up strip they run along.
Where you'll use data most in Alanya
The headland is the heart of any visit. Alanya Castle sits on top, with walls and towers spread across the hill and wide views over both bays, making it a prime spot for photos and video. Signal is usually decent at the top, though the steep paths and old walls can produce weaker patches on the way up. Down at the harbour, the octagonal Red Tower guards the waterfront, and this is where most boat trips leave from. Once you're out circling the headland and visiting the sea caves, expect the signal to dip and return, so save anything important before you board.
On the western side of the headland, Cleopatra Beach is the town's best-known stretch of sand, with good coverage along the shore. Close by lies Damlatas Cave, known for its stalactites and humid air; reception at the entrance is fine but tends to weaken or vanish once you're inside. Inland, the Dim river valley draws visitors to riverside restaurants set over the water, and the drive up into the Taurus villages above town is beautiful but patchy, with stretches where the signal drops between bends.
Tips for staying connected in Alanya
- Set up the eSIM while you're still at home on Wi-Fi, and turn it on once your plane touches down at GZP or AYT.
- Because Turkey isn't part of the EU, the European roaming add-ons that UK networks offer usually stop short of it - look up what your own provider charges for Turkey before you depend on it.
- The castle climb and the boat trips around the headland both have weaker spots, so don't count on uploading video in real time; it will catch up once you're back in town.
- Download an offline map before heading inland to the Dim river or the mountain villages, where the road winds through valleys with patchy coverage.
- If you're staying in a large resort hotel east or west of the centre, keep mobile data as a back-up for when shared Wi-Fi slows in the evening.
- Add 112, Turkey's emergency number, to your contacts before you go exploring.
