Your Rabat eSIM guide
Rabat is Morocco's calm, green capital, a city of tree-lined avenues, ocean breezes and grand monuments that feels refreshingly unhurried. Wander a whitewashed fortress quarter looking out over the Atlantic, explore centuries-old ruins softened by wild greenery, and watch small boats ferry passengers across to Sale. With fewer crowds than Morocco's better-known cities, it is a place to enjoy at a gentle pace.
Mobile coverage in Rabat
As the seat of government and home to embassies, ministries and universities, Rabat is a well-organised modern city with dependable mobile coverage. Maroc Telecom, Orange and inwi all cover it thoroughly, and in the central districts, the residential neighbourhood of Agdal and along the main avenues you can usually rely on strong 4G for navigation, streaming and video calls. Sale, the older sister city across the river, is generally well served too.
Rabat's historic heart is smaller and easier going than the great medinas of Fes or Marrakech, but it still has the narrow lanes and thick walls that can weaken reception, especially indoors. Guesthouses in the old town typically offer Wi-Fi to fill the gaps. Along the Atlantic coast and around the river mouth, the open setting means outdoor signal is usually good. If you would like to choose a plan by network, each plan's page shows which network it uses.
Getting around Rabat
Rabat-Sale (RBA) airport lies north-east of the city on the Sale side of the river, a fairly short taxi ride from the centre. Many visitors instead fly into Casablanca and continue by train, which is straightforward. Rabat sits on the high-speed train line that links Tangier with Casablanca, and the wider ONCF network and long-distance coaches connect it with Fes, Marrakech and beyond. The city has more than one railway station, so check which one your train uses.
Getting around town is easy. A modern tram links central Rabat with Sale across the Bou Regreg river, petits taxis are plentiful, and the compact centre is pleasant to explore on foot. Signal on the tram and in taxis is generally steady across the city, and on the train to Casablanca or Tangier you should stay connected for most of the journey, with only short quieter patches between towns.
Where you'll use data most in Rabat
The Kasbah of the Udayas is the city's most charming corner, a walled quarter on the clifftop above the river mouth, with painted lanes, a peaceful Andalusian-style garden and a terrace looking out over the ocean and Sale. Out on the terrace and walls, signal is usually good for photos and calls, though it can dip in the narrowest alleys. Inland, the unfinished Hassan Tower rises over a field of stone columns opposite the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, with ceremonial guards at its entrances; the wide, open esplanade generally has good reception.
On the edge of the centre, the Chellah is a walled site of ancient Roman and medieval ruins overgrown with gardens and fig trees, where storks nest on the old stones. It is quieter and more spread out, and signal among the ruins is usually workable but may vary. Back in the old town, the shops and stalls of the medina are pleasant to browse, and the beach and seafront nearby are good for an evening stroll, with coverage generally solid along the way. Across the river, the quieter old medina of Sale is an easy tram ride away and makes a rewarding half-day detour, though expect the same indoor dips in its older lanes.
Tips for staying connected in Rabat
- Install your eSIM at home and switch it on once you land, whether at Rabat-Sale or at Casablanca before catching the train.
- Check train times and buy tickets while you have good signal, and keep a screenshot of the booking in case you are in a weaker spot when you board.
- If you are using your UK plan, note that Morocco lies outside the European roaming area included with most UK tariffs, so roaming is usually charged at higher worldwide rates. Check with your network before you rely on it.
- Save an offline map of the medina and the Kasbah of the Udayas, as the lanes can be confusing and signal can dip between the walls.
- When visiting the Mausoleum of Mohammed V and other formal sites, follow any guidance on photography and keep your phone on silent.
- Before setting out, save Morocco's emergency numbers in your phone: 19 (police) and 15 (ambulance and fire).
