Your Durrës eSIM guide
Durrës is where Albania's past and its seaside holidays sit side by side. A Roman arena lies half hidden among the streets of the old town, fishing boats bob in the harbour, and a broad strand of golden sand stretches away to the south. It is lively in summer, easy-going the rest of the year, and close enough to the capital for an effortless escape to the sea.
Mobile coverage in Durrës
As Albania's main port and one of its largest cities, Durrës is generally well covered. One and Vodafone both serve the city, and in the centre, around the port and along the beach strip south of town, a good 4G signal is usually easy to find. Hotels, apartment blocks and restaurants line much of the seafront, so coverage there tends to be consistent from one end to the other.
Inside thick-walled old buildings and below ground, such as in the passages of the amphitheatre, reception can dip. In high summer, when the beach is at its fullest, the sheer number of people can slow data down at peak times. Head into the hills behind the city or along quieter stretches of coast and signal is still usually workable, if not quite as strong. Each plan's page shows which network it uses, if you want to know before you buy.
Getting around Durrës
Tirana International Airport (TIA) is under an hour away by road, and many visitors head straight to Durrës by taxi or transfer rather than staying in the capital first. Buses and furgons run frequently between Durrës and Tirana, and it is worth checking whether the train between the two cities is running when you visit. Ferries also sail from the port across the Adriatic to Italy, which makes Durrës a handy start or end point for a longer trip.
In the city, local buses run along the beach road, taxis are plentiful, and the centre and seafront are pleasant to walk. Signal on the road to Tirana is generally strong, as much of the route passes through built-up areas. On the ferry, coverage will fade soon after you leave port, so download your tickets and directions for arrival before you board.
Where you'll use data most in Durrës
The Roman amphitheatre, rediscovered among the houses of the old town and still only partly excavated, is the city's headline sight. Signal outside it is generally good, while in the vaulted corridors underneath it can weaken, so look up background information before you go in. A short walk away, the round Venetian Tower stands on a stretch of the old city walls near the seafront, and the promenade beside it is a popular place for an evening walk, with plenty of cafes where you can check plans for the next day.
South of the centre, the beach runs for miles past hotels, beach clubs and restaurants, and this is where most visitors spend their days. Coverage along it is usually reliable, though it can feel slower on crowded summer weekends. The Archaeological Museum on the seafront is worth an hour if the weather turns, and Tirana is close enough for a day trip by bus. If you are staying in one of the resort areas further down the coast, a quick bus or taxi ride brings you back into the centre for an evening on the promenade, and the route is usually well covered.
Tips for staying connected in Durrës
- Have the eSIM installed before you fly and switch it on after landing at TIA, so you can arrange your transfer to Durrës straight away.
- If you are taking the ferry to Italy, remember you will arrive in a different country where an Albania-only plan will not work; see eSIM for Italy for the next leg.
- Albania is not an EU member, so the EU roaming cover packaged with most UK mobile plans tends not to reach here. Ask your network about its Albania charges before you depend on roaming.
- Download your ferry ticket and directions from the port at the other end before you board, as signal disappears once you are out at sea.
- Agree a meeting point with friends on busy summer weekends at the beach, in case the crowded network makes messages slow to arrive.
- Keep Albania's emergency numbers in your phone: 129 for police, 127 for ambulance and 128 for fire.
