Your Tunisia eSIM guide
How to install your Tunisia eSIM in 3 steps
Skip the arrivals-hall SIM counter at Tunis-Carthage or Enfidha-Hammamet airport entirely by getting your Tunisia eSIM sorted before you even board.
- Buy your Tunisia eSIM online and receive the QR code by email within minutes, so there's no Ooredoo, Tunisie Telecom, or Orange Tunisie kiosk to track down after a long flight.
- Scan and install it while you're still on home Wi-Fi: on iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM and scan the code; on Android, go to Settings > SIM Manager > Add eSIM. Do this the day before you travel rather than relying on hotel or airport Wi-Fi in Tunisia to get it done.
- Turn on data roaming for the eSIM line as soon as the wheels touch down: open the eSIM's cellular settings and switch on "Data Roaming" so it locks onto a Tunisian network. Coverage around Tunis-Carthage and Djerba-Zarzis is strong enough that you'll typically pick up a bar of signal before the baggage carousel even starts moving.
Mobile network coverage in Tunisia
Tunisia's three operators split the map along different lines: Ooredoo carries the largest customer base nationwide, Tunisie Telecom is the state-owned network with a reputation for strong average speeds, and Orange Tunisie is the smallest of the three but is generally reported to push furthest into the Saharan fringe. Nationwide 4G reaches the large majority of the population, and consumer 5G has since launched.
Tunis and the coastal tourist belt
Tunis itself, plus the coastal run through Sousse, Hammamet, Monastir, Sfax, and Djerba, all get comprehensive 4G on every operator, and this stretch is also where Tunisia's early 5G rollout on 700 MHz and 3.5 GHz bands is concentrated. A travel eSIM isn't guaranteed to grab 5G even where the towers exist, so treat 4G as your baseline here and any 5G bars as a bonus.
Inland, the south, and the Sahara
Head inland to Kairouan and service commonly drops to 3G or patchy 4G rather than the coast's steady signal. Push further south toward Tozeur, Douz, or Tataouine on the Sahara's edge and coverage turns intermittent 3G/4G at best, thinning further away from the main roads and disappearing altogether once you're out in open desert. Orange Tunisie is the operator most often reported to reach furthest into these southern and Saharan areas.
Getting around: highways, causeways, and ferries
The coastal corridor linking Tunis to Sousse, Sfax, and on to Djerba holds a steady 4G signal for most of the drive, so a road trip along that route rarely leaves you offline. Djerba island itself has excellent coverage from end to end, whether you arrive over the causeway at El Kantara or by the short ferry crossing from Jorf on the mainland.
How much data do you need for your trip to Tunisia?
| Usage style | Daily estimate | 1-week trip | Good fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light (maps, messaging, occasional browsing) | ~300 MB | 2-3 GB | See light-data plans |
| Moderate (social media, some navigation, streaming music) | ~750 MB | ~5 GB | See moderate-data plans |
| Heavy (video streaming, hotspot use, video calls) | 1.5 GB+ | 10-20 GB | See heavy-data plans |
eSIM vs. roaming vs. a local SIM in Tunisia
| Travel eSIM | Home-carrier roaming | Local SIM | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical cost | Plans from £0.62 | Can run from around £4-£8 per GB on an EU North Africa add-on up to £1,543 per GB on some US plans without one | Low-cost SIM plus a prepaid data bundle from Ooredoo, Tunisie Telecom, or Orange |
| Setup | Buy and scan the QR code before you fly, no store visit needed | Usually automatic, occasionally needs a roaming toggle switched on at home | Requires an in-person stop at an operator counter after landing in Tunis, Djerba, or Sousse |
| Keep your number | Yes, your home number stays reachable for calls/texts | Yes | No, you're issued a new Tunisian number |
| ID/passport needed | No | No | Yes, all three operators require passport registration for any local SIM, no exceptions for visitors |
For a stay that runs well past a typical holiday, the calculation shifts: staying for weeks rather than days in Tunisia can trigger phone registration with the authorities tied to both your IMEI and your passport, and once that paperwork is out of the way a Tunisie Telecom or Ooredoo line is easy to top up at kiosks across Tunis and the coastal towns.
Tips for staying connected in Tunisia
- Save Tunisia's real emergency numbers before you land: 197 for police, 198 for fire and civil protection, and 190 for an ambulance (SAMU). All three are free to call from any Tunisian SIM, and the general 112 number is unreliable in Tunisia.
- Traveling to Djerba? Coverage there is consistently strong island-wide, including on the causeway and the mainland ferry crossing at Jorf, so it's one of the few places in Tunisia you can count on a reliable signal everywhere.
- Heading toward Tataouine, Douz, or other Sahara-edge towns? Download offline maps first, since 3G/4G there is intermittent at best and vanishes completely on desert tracks away from the main roads.
- An extended stay of several weeks or more may trigger IMEI-and-passport phone registration with Tunisian authorities, something a travel eSIM avoids entirely since there's no local registration step.
- If your itinerary continues on to more of the continent, check our eSIM for Africa options before you leave Tunis.
Traveling beyond Tunisia?
Making Tunisia one leg of a longer Mediterranean or North African trip? Line up an eSIM for Morocco for the other end of the Maghreb, an eSIM for Egypt for the Nile and Red Sea coast, an eSIM for Malta for the short hop across the Sicilian Channel, an eSIM for Italy if Sicily or the mainland is next, or an eSIM for France for the common onward flight out of Tunis-Carthage. For broader continental coverage, see our Africa eSIM plans.
