Your Panama eSIM guide
How to install your Panama eSIM in 3 steps
Setting up a Panama eSIM takes a few minutes on Wi-Fi before you leave home, so you land at Tocumen International Airport (PTY) near Panama City ready to use data straight off the plane.
- Buy your plan online. Choose a Panama data plan that matches your trip length and get your QR code by email within minutes, so there's no kiosk to queue at once you land.
- Scan and install before you fly. On iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM and scan the QR code; on Android, go to Settings > Network & Internet > SIM Manager > Add eSIM. Do this over Wi-Fi, ideally before boarding, since terminal Wi-Fi at busy airports can be patchy right at arrival time.
- Activate on arrival and turn on data roaming. After landing at Tocumen, or connecting on through Panama City's smaller Albrook (Marcos A. Gelabert) airport, switch to your Panama eSIM line and enable data roaming for it so it can pick up a signal from Tigo, Más Móvil or another local network the moment you're on the ground.
Mobile network coverage in Panama
Panama City and the major cities
Panama City has the country's most complete network, with near-complete 4G LTE reach and early 5G service now live in parts of the capital from Más Móvil, Cable & Wireless and Tigo. Speeds in the city typically run in the 50-100 Mbps range and hold up well indoors, from Casco Viejo's narrow streets to the high-rises around Punta Pacífica. David, the main city in Chiriquí Province near the Costa Rica border, and Colón on the Caribbean side both have strong, consistent 4G from the major operators, making them reliable stops for anyone road-tripping across the isthmus.
Rural interior, coast and islands
Coverage drops off quickly outside the cities: 4G reaches the large majority of Panama's population, but leaves large stretches of the country's land area with patchy or no signal, so once you leave a town the bars can disappear fast. Más Móvil generally holds the widest rural footprint and is the strongest option along remote stretches, while Tigo tends to edge ahead in city centers and customer service. Bocas del Toro's island town has fair 4G that's usable for calls, maps and light browsing, but the San Blas Islands (Guna Yala) are a real blind spot, with little to no reliable signal across most of the archipelago, so treat any time there as offline. The Pearl Islands (Las Perlas), including Contadora, are steadily improving as ferry links and small domestic flights to the mainland expand.
Getting around and transit
The Pan-American Highway, Panama's main domestic backbone connecting the capital toward the Costa Rica border, keeps a workable signal for most of its length, with +Móvil generally the most dependable choice if you're self-driving the interior. Ferries out to the Pearl Islands and short flights connecting to Bocas del Toro are the two main gateways beyond the mainland grid; once you're aboard a boat headed for San Blas, plan on losing signal well before you reach the islands.
How much data do you need for your trip to Panama?
How much data your Panama trip needs mostly comes down to how much time you'll spend off the grid in places like San Blas versus streaming and navigating around Panama City.
| Usage style | Daily estimate | 1-week trip | Good fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light | ~300 MB | 2-3 GB | Maps and messaging around Panama City and Casco Viejo |
| Moderate | ~750 MB | ~5 GB | Social media, photos and browsing between David, Boquete and Bocas del Toro |
| Heavy | 1.5 GB+ | 10-20 GB | Video calls, streaming and remote work from Panama City or Bocas del Toro |
eSIM vs. roaming vs. a local SIM in Panama
| Travel eSIM | Home-carrier roaming | Local SIM | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical cost | Panama plans start from £0.98, with data-heavy options from £4.89 | Often £8-£11 per day on a travel pass, more if you skip one | Around £2 buys several days of unlimited data once you're in the country |
| Setup | Scan a QR code on Wi-Fi before you fly; activates automatically on arrival | Nothing to do, but check your carrier's Panama rates before landing | Buy at Tocumen airport, a Tigo or Más Móvil store, or a convenience shop |
| Keep your number | Yes, runs alongside your regular SIM | Yes | No, you get a new Panama number |
| ID/passport needed | Not required for the eSIM plan itself | None beyond your existing account | Yes, a valid passport at the point of sale; the seller registers the SIM in your name |
Panama's official currency is the US dollar, so anyone settling into Panama City or the highlands around Boquete for months at a time can walk into a Tigo or Más Móvil counter, hand over a passport, and register a local line paying with ordinary US bills, no currency exchange, prepaid voucher or long-term contract needed, unlike the recurring top-ups an eSIM plan requires over an extended stay.
Tips for staying connected in Panama
- Save offline maps for the San Blas Islands (Guna Yala) and the deeper Darién region before you go; coverage there is unreliable enough that you shouldn't count on real-time navigation.
- In an emergency, dial 911, Panama's unified emergency number; you can also reach police directly on 104 or fire services on 103.
- If you're driving the Pan-American Highway toward the interior, +Móvil tends to hold a signal longest between towns, so it's worth knowing which network your eSIM data partner uses on that stretch.
- Top up or switch to a heavier plan before heading out to Bocas del Toro or the Pearl Islands, since buying more data is far easier from a Panama City hotel than from a dock in Contadora.
- Keep your physical SIM active for calls or texts on your home number while your Panama eSIM handles data, so you're not stuck choosing between the two.
- Heading north toward the border, our eSIM for Costa Rica covers you the moment you cross at Paso Canoas or Sixaola.
Traveling beyond Panama?
Panama sits at the hinge between Central and South America, so many trips continue past its borders. If your route carries on, take a look at our eSIM for Costa Rica for the beaches and cloud forests over the western border, our eSIM for Colombia for onward travel past the Darién Gap by air, our eSIM for Nicaragua and eSIM for Guatemala if you're touring the wider isthmus, or our eSIM for Mexico for a longer Central American loop.
