Your India eSIM guide
How to install your India eSIM in 3 steps
India's Department of Telecommunications requires every foreign visitor buying a local SIM to hand over a passport, visa stamp, hotel booking and photo before the number activates; installing an eSIM before you fly skips that process altogether, so you land at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International, Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International or any other gateway already connected instead of filling out that paperwork at the counter.
- Buy your India eSIM online and receive the QR code and activation details by email within minutes – no Aadhaar, passport scan or in-person KYC visit required, unlike a physical local SIM.
- Before you leave home, connect to Wi-Fi and install it: on iPhone go to Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM and scan the QR code; on Android go to Settings > Network & Internet > SIM Manager (wording varies by brand) > Add eSIM. Set the new line as your data SIM and keep your home number as primary for calls and texts.
- After landing at Indira Gandhi International (Delhi) or Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International (Mumbai), switch on data roaming for the eSIM line in your cellular settings so it can register on Jio or Airtel – both run dense 5G through the arrivals halls at hubs like Delhi's T3 and Mumbai's T2, and if the network name that appears is BSNL rather than Jio or Airtel, switching to manual network selection usually fixes it.
Mobile network coverage in India
India's mobile map is shaped by three operators: Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi). Jio has the widest reach of the three, with the strongest footprint in rural districts and remote towns; Airtel comes close behind, excelling in metros and major cities with strong indoor coverage; Vi covers the major circles but lags in rural areas, so it suits metro-to-metro routes better than a full circuit of the country.
Cities and tourist circuits
Delhi, Mumbai, Agra and Goa all sit on comprehensive 4G and 5G, with typical speeds around 50-100+ Mbps in central areas and Jio often pushing well past that in city centers. In Kerala, Kochi carries strong 4G/5G throughout, while the backwater houseboat routes further out can be noticeably patchier than the city itself.
Rural areas, coast and mountains
Rural India is more connected than most travelers expect – a large majority of villages carry a workable 4G signal, so the drive between cities is rarely a dead zone. The exception is the Himalayas: hill stations such as Shimla, Manali and Mussoorie hold a signal in the town center but drop off quickly once you're down in a valley or crossing a mountain pass. Island coverage has improved sharply too – Lakshadweep and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands now carry a usable, if modest, data connection rather than almost none.
Getting around: trains, buses and transit
Main rail corridors – think the Delhi-Agra-Jaipur route or the Mumbai suburban network – plus the Delhi and Mumbai metro systems carry reliable coverage from Jio and Airtel. Highways between major cities are generally strong; it's side roads into smaller towns and mountain passes where signal is more likely to thin out.
How much data do you need for your trip to India?
| Usage style | Daily estimate | 1-week trip | Good fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light – maps and messaging | ~300 MB | 2-3 GB | See light-use plans |
| Moderate – social media, some streaming | ~750 MB | ~5 GB | See moderate-use plans |
| Heavy – video calls, streaming, hotspot | 1.5 GB+ | 10-20 GB | See heavy-use plans |
eSIM vs. roaming vs. a local SIM in India
| Travel eSIM | Home-carrier roaming | Local SIM | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical cost | From £0.77 for the trip | Often £27-£45 per day without a pack | Cheap per GB once registered, plus queue and wait time |
| Setup | Scan a QR code before you fly | Automatic, but confirm your carrier covers India | Find a store, complete KYC, then wait 30 minutes to 48 hours |
| Keep your number | Yes, on a second line | Yes | No, new Indian number issued |
| ID/passport needed | No | No | Yes – passport, e-visa or visa stamp, hotel booking, a photo, and sometimes a local phone reference |
A local SIM can undercut an eSIM on cost-per-GB, but only once you're settled enough to justify it – foreign nationals on longer-stay visas (work, study, research) must also register with the FRRO or complete e-FRRO paperwork on top of the usual passport-and-visa KYC before a Jio or Airtel SIM activates. For a two- or three-week circuit of Delhi, Agra and Goa, though, that same paperwork rarely makes sense against a QR code installed at home.
Tips for staying connected in India
- Save 112 as your emergency contact – it's India's unified, toll-free number, works even with no SIM balance, and supports regional languages; older numbers like 100 (police), 101 (fire) and 108 (ambulance) still work in many states too.
- Heading to Ladakh – Leh, Pangong Tso, Nubra Valley? Plan for offline stretches, since prepaid and international eSIMs are restricted there by regulation.
- Manually select Jio or Airtel if your eSIM locks onto a weaker network, especially once you're outside Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru.
- Download offline maps before heading into hill routes like Manali-Leh, where signal can vanish between valleys.
- Turn on data roaming specifically for the eSIM line, not just general mobile data – a common reason travelers land at Indira Gandhi International with no connection.
- Combining India with a wider trip through the region? Check the Asia eSIM for multi-country coverage.
Traveling beyond India?
Many India itineraries continue into neighboring countries or nearby island escapes. If your route extends further, see an eSIM for Nepal for Himalayan treks out of Kathmandu, an eSIM for Sri Lanka for a coastal add-on, an eSIM for Bangladesh for an eastern border crossing, an eSIM for Maldives for an island stopover, or an eSIM for Pakistan for a northern overland route. For a wider multi-country trip, browse the Asia eSIM plans.
